Although the keyword “air pollution” is reminiscent of outdoor areas, indoor areas in particular are polluted with harmful chemicals. Volatile organic compounds, also known as “Volatile Organic Compounds – VOCs”, are particularly problematic. VOCs are released from many paints, adhesives, plastics, cleaning agents, building materials, etc. Binders such as polyurethane (PUR) can also escape from freshly laid boards made of natural materials such as cork.
In addition to unpleasant odors, health impairments are also possible. The most common symptoms are: Headaches, hypersensitivity reactions, fatigue, reduced performance, sleep disorders and irritation of the respiratory tract. The clinical picture is known in English as “Sick Building Syndrome” or “Building related illnesses”. related illnesses“.
Possible sources of volatile organic compounds VOCs in the air:
- wall and ceiling paints, varnishes
- insulation materials
- TV, PC, other electronic devices
- printer ink
- carpets and other floors
- synthetic materials
- paper and cardboard
- particle boards and other board materials in furniture
Luftkurholz – composite panels with activated carbon clean the indoor air
The composite panels are based on two natural materials: gypsum and cork. The binding agents used and the coating of the surface do not emit VOCs. Luftkurholz has the ability to adsorb and retain toxic substances such as PCBs, formaldehyde (the most common VOC), dioxins and other VOCs. Activated carbon placed in the cork with our special process can efficiently adsorb chemical substances and purify the ambient air thanks to its large surface area.
How it works
At the molecular level, activated carbon and VOCs enter a “charge-transfer” complex. The pi-complex of a VOC molecule binds to the coal, allowing the remaining, unbound molecules of the ambient air to redistribute. The concentration of VOCs in the air decreases. In this way, Luftkurholz is not only odorless and without VOC evaporation, but is also able to “cure the air” in a room – hence the parts of the name Luft-Kur-Holz (german) = Air-Cure-Wood.
